How Cleansing Herbs Can Help You
Celebrities have almost everyone on a purifying kick and make use of cleansing herbal treatments for that ideal detox. I think most people use cleanses for quick weight loss, which is not their purpose. Oh you will lose weight because they are often rigid and very low calorie, but they are not meant to be used for weeks at a time. As all of us who have crash dieted know, it is not a permanent solution. You will either quit because you’re ravenous or gain it all back once you’re done because you’re starving.
Proponents of cleanses tout better mental focus, glowing skin, and better digestive health. It sounds good and we all ingest a lot of toxins through the environment and poor food choices. In a perfect world our bodies do a pretty efficient job of eliminating toxins through the skin, the liver, the kidneys and the bowels. Good nutrition, regular elimination, staying hydrated and exercise help the body keep the toxins from building up. When we fail to eat well, exercise, or ingest too much sugar ands caffeine, our body rebels. We may have skin problems, headaches, PMS, fatigue, weight gain and bowel problems. Hey, we all do it. Think about you feel after the holidays. My resolve to do better is always high in January because of the prior month of nonstop eating, rich food, and going to parties.
There are seven herbs reputed to aid in the cleansing process. You may be surprised to know that those pesky dandelions are one of them. My husband’s family eats dandelion greens, but I have yet to try them. Dandelions contain bitter, vitamin C, potassium, and an enzymatic-like substance that stimulates bile production, helping the liver to digest fat. Maybe I should try some. Burdock is another bitter herb that also stimulates bile production. It is often used as a tea, but the raw root can be sliced and used in soup or salads. Garlic is one remedy I can get behind. I love it, but if you hate the taste, capsules are available. Garlic has antiviral, antiseptic, bile stimulating, and blood cleansing properties. It is a “gentle herb” and safe to use over long periods of time. Milk thistle is another liver supportive herb. Two Indian herbs, picrorhiza kurroa and phyllanthusamarus are believed to be liver supportive and protect against hepatitis B and parasitic infections. Triphala is actually a combination of
three herbs that improve digestion and elimination and is used as a mild, gentle laxative.
All this being said, remember cleanses are meant to be used on the short term. If you have existing liver or gall bladder disease, consult your physician before trying any of these herbal products. In fact it is never a bad idea to consult your doctor before beginning any diet or cleansing regimen. If you get the OK and are happy with the results, an occasional cleanse may be beneficial. Try to find the best cleansing herbs on the market for the best relief.
